The History of Young's Bicycle Shop

The story of Young’s Bicycle Shop began during the difficulties of the Great Depression and continues on today in its fourth generation of family ownership.

In 1929 Harvey A Young and his wife Adelaide came to Nantucket, where he had accepted a job as a steamfitter for a plumbing company.

But when the stock market crashed in October of that year, they had to come up with additional ways to earn a living in the new economy.

The resourceful couple sold homemade candies and sweets out of a small addition they built onto their house, and they rented spare rooms to boarders to help generate income.

Harvey could also repair or fabricate just about anything. Most of his neighbors had bikes and Harvey was the perfect person to fix them.

Since there was little money to pay for repairs, an arrangement was made; he would rent their bikes to the summer visitors until the bill was paid. He then offered to continue renting the bikes for a 50/50 split of the income.

With the profits he bought a small fleet of used bikes and in 1931 started Harvey A Young’s Bicycle Shop out of the shed behind his home.

Bicycles were a popular means of transportation in those days, and soon Harvey had plenty of business (and plenty of bikes).

The story goes that when the shed and back yard were full of bikes he started bringing them inside the house, including the kitchen. That’s when his wife Adelaide said “get these bikes out of my kitchen!”

So in 1933 Harvey rented a commercial space near the wharf and moved the business to Broad Street.

While the island has changed a lot over the years, Young's has continued to be part of the Nantucket community, proudly serving locals and visitors alike.

You can still find us at 6 Broad Street helping the island’s visitors experience the “Cycle-Logical Way to see Nantucket”.

We'd love to have you become part of our story, too.
